To formulate, monitor and influence laws, regulations and policies which have an impact on working women.

To address issues and create a structure that will attract a membership that is reflective of Michigan's female labor force.

History:

In January of 1946, two women, Frances Luibrand of Bay City and Frances Fettig of Saginaw thought Alma was the perfect place to start another Business and Professional Women’s Organization. They initiated the establishment of the Alma Area BPW. Along with the help of Irene Harwood and Ione Hoard Lutz in March of 1946, eighteen women were ready to organize into the Alma Business and Professional Women’s Club. The first meeting was held April 29, 1946 in the home of Ione Hoard Lutz. Luibrand and Fettig attended the first meeting to help prepare a charter, elect officers, and collect dues. The Alma BPW Charter was approved and presented at the May 25, 1946 State Convention in Traverse City. The Alma Business and Professional Women’s Organization remains the only Club to have the honor of having their charter approved and resented at a State Convention.

These events of 1946 initiated over a half century of service, growth, and friendship. Currently the organization boasts a large and varied membership with a broad variety of occupations represented. Yet the services offered by the Alma Area BPW are not limited to the members. Throughout the years, it has served the Alma community and Alma College with many philanthropic endeavors. It Is not only a group advocating women’s professional advancement, but community growth as well.
